In July, 1964, W. C. Duesenberg, then Branch Manager of Kurt Hitke and Company, purchased the assets of the Atlanta office and changed the name to Southern Insurance Underwriters, Inc.
Although the principal business written in 1964 was non-standard automobile, taxicabs, and local/ long haul trucks, SIU continues to write these lines as well as specialty general liability lines, and all lines of property and casualty coverages. Initially, Southern Insurance Underwriters represented two companies, National Indemnity Company of Omaha, Nebraska and Midland National Insurance Company of Chicago. Today, SIU represents more than 150 admitted and non-admitted specialty companies, Lloyd’s of London, and several standard companies.
Southern Insurance Underwriters’ premium volume has continually grown since 1964 and is represented by over 2,500 Independent Agents, primarily in the states of Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, and Alabama. In addition to the home office in Atlanta, SIU has offices in Orlando, Florida and Montgomery, AL.
SIU has a broad range of property, casualty, and transportation products and specializes in hard to place, specialty and excess & surplus lines risks. With an experienced staff of seasoned underwriters, the scope of risks that can be underwritten ranges from the most simple property risks to highly sophisticated self-insured programs.
SIU is active in the American Association of Managing General Agents (AAMGA), National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices (NAPSLO), the Independent Insurance Agents of Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina and the Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) of Georgia, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina.
